The Washtenaw Intermediate School District is proud to continue our professional learning series on culturally responsive teaching. The Responsive Teaching Institute, grew out of what was known as the Responsive Mathematics Institute, because we realize that responsive teaching strategies can be implemented in any classroom. Over the last three years, the conference has also explored culturally relevant leadership practices. The Responsive Teaching Institute is an opportunity for educators to examine instruction from an equity perspective.
As educators, we are seeking to provide all children with learning environments that are equitable, accessible, and supportive. The institute provides educators with the opportunity to critically reflect on their instructional practices, as well as, school policies to identify practices or policies that promote inequity. The structure of the 2019-2020 institute supports the development of small networks. Speakers have been invited to attend multiple sessions of the institute, and additional support will be made available from the Achievement Initiatives team. It is our hope that the cohort model will allow educators more time to engage with the speakers and develop their critical consciousness about inequities that might be present within their learning environments
